Sizing Large (ii)

This shoe fits large: consider a smaller size

The best guide for sizing your new Freet shoes is to start with your usual shoe size. Think about whether you always take this size or whether you sometimes need to go smaller or larger.

Customer feedback is that this style fits large to size; if you sometimes have to go down a size, it is more likely that you may need to go down a size with this style.

Our shoes are originally produced in EU sizes. All UK sizes are the closest conversion so, if you know your EU size, you may want to consider using this.

Measuring Your Foot

Sometimes as a second check it is worth measuring your foot. Feet can be different sizes so its worth measuring both and taking the largest.

Standing next to a wall place a piece of paper against the wall. Place your foot on the paper with your heel just touching the wall.

Measuring Your Foot
  • The next stage is easier if you get someone else to help do it.
  • Take a pencil or pen and trace the outline of the foot on the paper.
  • Start at the heel.
  • Keep the pen at 90 degrees to the paper, so vertical, see diagram.
  • Don't draw under the foot.
Keep pencil verical
Taking a ruler measure the length of the outline in millimetres. This will be the exact size of the insole you will need. To ensure the fit is not tight add another 5.0 - 10.0 mm to the length. If you wear thick socks then add that thickness to the length.

Measuring your outline

If possible, please work from the EU sizes (the US and UK sizes are nearest conversions to these sizes so will not be as accurate). The lengths and widths are the dimensions of the insole in mm measured as per the picture below:

One year's usage review

This is review of Freet Swales that I've now worn every day for 1 year. Originally purchased in the sale for £60 in July 2024, I've now purchased a couple more pairs for a sale price of £70 in 2025. I think the sale price is a good one, whereas full price of £90 is stretching it a bit in terms of value for money.
My 'normal' shoe size was length UK 9.5 with an extra wide width fitting (size '2V'). The Swale size UK9.5/EU44 has been ideal fit.
In very hot weather, your feet don't get sweaty at all. In cold weather, the shoes are so minimal and breathable on the uppers, that I found wearing an extra pair of woollen socks kept things warm.
I also found that putting a pair of Vivobarefoot's Thermal Insoles (size EU 44) was the ideal enhancement for both warmth and underfoot comfort. If Freet offered comparable thermal insoles for their shoes, I'd be very interested in seeing what price they might sell them for.
In the attached pictures, you can see what one year's wear and tear walking around a home and on urban pavements has done. They have just started to fail and thus now water gets in through the soles if you step in a puddle (see the crack in the moulded pattern in the second picture). The uppers and laces are still in as good a condition as they were when originally bought.
All in all, I would recommend these shoes.
If I had a wish, I wonder if the soles could have been made of a more durable compound to withstand more than 1 years' walking on tough urban surfaces.

Fantastic

I love them. Perfect for summer walking when it might be a bit wet underfoot and I don't want to wear sandals, as they dry quickly. And they provide that bit extra support and protection but are still lightweight and cool.

Great

I only hiked in easy terrains with them so far. They are very confortable. I feel like I'm wearing slippers. I did go a size down to my usual size.

Great summer boots

This is my second pair of Swale boots. I ordered a size down from normal. They're cool for the summer and are great for rocky beaches

Good fit

I have very wide feet and was expecting to have to go up a size for these to fit, but they fit really nicely. They were immediately comfortable even from the first time I wore them.
